Batik & Indigo…

January 27, 2014 · 1 Comment

I had a wonderful experience this week-end by taking an Indigo Dyeing Workshop given by Maggie Pate from Chattanooga, TN. Maggie Pate is an amazing and beautiful textile designer and a printmaker who really has a wonderful way of giving a wholesome and truly complete class. She is easy going and can handle a crowd of students all eager to get their hands stained with indigo blue. She is also the creator of  inks + thread a textile and scarf collection created by her obsession with dyes and patterns.

An illustration of mine, sharing several of my results that I created within Maggie Pate’s class.
I learned a few Shibori wrapping and tying techniques, while adding my twist on things.
I will be offering original batik scarves and samples with my work soon.

This workshop was offered through The Skillery a flexible and friendly coworking space that offers classes and workshops for (and by) Nashville’s creative entrepreneurs. The Skillery is a platform and home for community and collaboration, with an amazing set-up. Nashville is and has been rocking for it’s artists.

With the heavens now so far above, and God even farther,
the people of the land and their children, and their children for generations to come,
each filled with their own great hunger, were set out on a trail of infinite desire.
Their longing was made material in the bluest of God’s blues -in garments dyed in indigo
.

My feeling for this color started by drawing with my fountain pen & some beautiful ink.

https://www.jherbin.com/fountain_pen_inks.shtml

Then I watched how it played with other hues;

Cherri Fizz by © Lisa Rivas

…it really knew how to dance and sway around!

This color was radiating as if it had been born in the Tropics,
it was so infused with movement and light.

TROPICAL FUSION – The making of it’s Logo!

January 14, 2014 · 8 Comments

“RADIANT ORCHID”
(a beautiful fusion of color)

PANTONE 18-3224 Color of the Year 2014

Here is a true invitation to innovation, to the modern and versatile Radiant Orchid a color that  encourages creativity + originality.
Imbued within, is the wonderful harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink.
Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and its rosy undertones emanate great joy, love and health.

Radiant Orchid mood-board by Lisa Rivas

I created a mood-board on Pinterest about this color so to see its possibilities,
here’s a selection that inspired my design for this logo of the BLOG-HOP.
I then did some research on Color + Physics!

Pantone RADIANT ORCHID -18-3224

Upon looking at the color values of Radiant Orchid’s  formulations,
it came to my attention that it was 19% Cyan (blue) and 70% Magenta (red)

a fusion = Radiant Orchid

In some way it was like a marriage of these 2 colors, brilliant!
Ah, …so RADIANT …of course a Tropical Fusion,
it is worth a hop. Towards this BLOG-HOP!

 Tropical Fusion, a blog-hop!

…and thus was born this logo and branding image for TROPICAL FUSION,
a color-pattern blog-hop!

Tropical Fusion - banner design by Lisa Rivas

Keep yourself tuned in, since there is more to come!
So many fabulous surface and pattern designers will have something so special to hop to!
Starting this coming Saturday, January 18 • What a treat!

The Little Partridge,

December 13, 2013 · 3 Comments

All the birds call thee blessed, They come with thee in flocks,

They come around thee chirping :
In truth there is not one like thee.
Ah! pretty, pretty, Ah! beautiful little partridge!

~from an Armenian folk song

The Little Partridge by ©Lisa Rivas

Is this “The little partridge” that the “Pear Tree” left me?

Trees are sanctuaries.
Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth.
They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life.

Going to Quilt Market…

October 16, 2013 · 5 Comments

Most people know me as a fine artist, a painter that uses methods… strange methods. The real truth to the story is that all these methods are textile related, because that has been my dream! Cloth and thread has been something I have been attached to forever something similar to a mother’s apron strings. It gives me comfort.

It’s been years in the making to even get close to this world in a larger sense other than the fabric stores. I made it a mission in the past couple of years to learn everything I can about this market. It has been tricky and at times very disheartening, almost like this industry takes place in faraway exotic tents.

Quilt sample © Lisa Rivas

Well a couple of years ago I exhibited at Surtex thinking I would get in touch with this field by my presence there. But nothing consequential happened other than meeting some very nice artists and realizing there are other places where the action is. A place of action is at the Quilt Markets, a booming industry circling all around the wonderful craft of making quilts. Quiltmaking is a huge craft today in the United States and it involves the bolt fabric industry. There is a whole art about making the perfect design for quilting fabric. In a future post I’ll give a bit of insight on this.

Next week I am finally attending the International Quilt Market in Houston, it will be very exciting to finally connect to this warm and beautiful field!

Blankets wrap you in warmth, quilts wrap you in love.

When I take the time to look and to really see and to apply my "foolish" imagination, there are worlds within worlds within worlds to be discovered.

When I allow my eyes to be excited and fascinated and pleased at what they see, I begin a journey, inventing a path to the place I choose to go; and magic happens!
